Mucosal Immunology – Free Trial

A Free Trial has been arranged for Mucosal Imunology from October 19 to November 19.

If more than 15 people show an interest in this journal by e-mailing the library staff to say that they think we should get it, the Tucker Library may be able to subscribe to it in 2010.

Aims and scope of journal

Mucosal Immunology is the official publication of the Society of Mucosal Immunology (SMI). It aims to provide a forum for both basic and clinical scientists to discuss all aspects of immunity and inflammation involving mucosal tissues. The journal reflects the interests of scientists studying gastrointestinal, pulmonary, nasopharyngeal, oral, ocular, and genitourinary immunology through the publication of original research articles, scholarly reviews, and timely commentaries, editorials and letters. Publication of basic, translational, and clinical studies will all be given equal consideration. In addition, Mucosal Immunology aims to provide a primary method of communication for the SMI governing board and its members through the publication of society news, announcements of planned meetings and conferences, discussions of policy concerns, and advertisements for job and training opportunities.

Science Translational Medicine – Free Trial

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is pleased to announce that the full text of Science Translational Medicine is available online at http://www.sciencetranslationalmedicine.org.

Science Translational Medicine is a weekly journal devoted to original research and other issues of strong interest to the translational medicine community. Translational medicine topics suitable for submission include any original research findings, discussions or analyses that move the field closer to the goal of improving human health, or the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Science Translational Medicine contains the full content of each issue of the journal, including all figures and tables, beginning with its inaugural issue, published October 7, 2009 (Volume 1, Issue 1).

Sneak preview of October 2009 articles:

• Chief Scientific Adviser Elias Zerhouni’s views on the importance of translational medicine
• A commentary from William Crowley, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, on how academic medical centers can reinvent themselves to become engines for translational progress and ultimately improved patient care
• A research paper from leading institutes in France and England reporting results of studies in nonhuman primates that pave the way for clinical trials with patients with Parkinson’s Disease

This journal will be on free trial from the publishers until December 23, 2009.

The full Price is $3,280. For 2010, there would be an early adopter discount and it would cost $1,640.

Due to continuing budget cuts, the Tucker Library will probably not be buying this journal for 2010. The Library committee will be considering it. But we thought you would like to see this new journal from a major publisher.

Journal Collection for 2010

The Tucker Library budget was reduced by $60,000 for FY09 necessitating a 50% reduction in the amount of titles we purchase due to inflation of prices and amortization of payments. A list of the 146 titles eliminated for 2009 can be seen on the January Post.

Since the start of FY10 in July, we have re-purchased some of the Annual Reviews and the journal, Lancet. By purchasing Lancet, we have restored access to the ScienceDirect archives for the 1995 to 2008. These 35 journal archives have been reloaded into our journal access systems.

In the fall, the Library Committee will be determining which journals to cancel and which to buy for 2010. No inflationary increase was allowed in the journal budget for FY10 so we will need to cut another 10% of the collection. We plan to re-balance the collection based on subject needs and goals for the journal collection. We will cancel some titles we did not cancel in 2009 and re-buy some we did.

We welcome any comment from the library users about this process. Look at the list below of the journals we do buy and the January Post for the journals we canceled. Email us or leave a comment on either page about which journals you would like to see re-instated and which you think might be canceled.

Journal Changes at Tucker Library Due to Global Economic Downturn

Because of the global economic downturn, the Tucker Library budget for FY09 has been reduced. This, combined with a 7-10% inflation factor on the journals, all access to 146 journal titles and standing orders for books series has been eliminated for 2009. The print copy for 25 titles has been canceled, as well as various databases and other resources. They are listed below.

Something new every day! Since this journal has been around since 2006, it’s not that new. But, it is now indexed in MEDLINE and it is Open Access. Look here for training videos. Link them from your website!

Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer reviewed, free access, online journal devoted to the publication of biological research in a video format.

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) was established as a new tool in life science publication and communication, with participation of scientists from leading research institutions. JoVE takes advantage of video technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life science research. Visualization greatly facilitates the understanding and efficient reproduction of both basic and complex experimental techniques, thereby addressing two of the biggest challenges faced by today’s life science research community: i) low transparency and poor reproducibility of biological experiments and ii) time and labor-intensive nature of learning new experimental techniques.

The complexity and breadth of life science research has increased exponentially in recent years. Research progress and the translation of findings from the bench to clinical therapies relies on the rapid transfer of knowledge both within the research community and the general public. Written word and static picture-based traditional print journals are no longer sufficient to accurately transmit the intricacies of modern research.
